Behind that long and lonely trenched line
To which men come and go, where brave men die,
There is a yet unmarked and unknown shrine,
A broken plot, a soldier’s cemetery.
There lie the flower of youth, the men who scorn’d
To live (so died) when languished Liberty:
Across their graves flowerless and unadorned
Still scream the shells of each artillery.
When war shall cease this lonely unknown spot
Of many a pilgrimage will be the end,
And flowers will shine in this now barren plot
And fame upon it through the years descend:
But many a heart upon each simple cross
Will hang the grief, the memory of its loss.

for organ
Written with the organ in De Doelen’s Grote Zaal in mind. Therefore, the architecture of the organ takes center stage, becoming the vehicle for the development of musical discourse; meaning that this piece is about exploring the different, independent parts of this special organ, and the way they interact with each other and the space around them — the way that the sound from each individual section propagates within the hall. All the while creating an intense, introspective atmosphere.
Recording of the premiere on March 26th, 2018, as part of the Red Sofa 10 jaar! – Festival Spring Loaded. Performed by Vincent de Ridder.

Mevlanaplein Railway overpass, Rotterdam, on May 25th 2019. Performed as part of the Post-Opera project in connection with Tent Rotterdam; Operadagen Rotterdam and V2 Rotterdam.
The Tarwewijk Choir participated in ‘Scores for Rotterdam’; a project by Mercedes Azpilicueta and John Bingham-Hall which seeks to bring aural attention to forgotten spaces in the city. This performance was the Tarwewijk choir’s compositional response to the Mevlanaplein Railway overpass and was performed as part of a public intervention there.
The Tarwewijk Choir is an 8-part consort of young musicians from Rotterdam. The choir has a core repertoire of Renaissance and Contemporary music. We specialise in new compositions and collaborative improvisation.
